Los Caminos Antiguos

Los Caminos Antiguos (The Ancient Road) is one of 23 Scenic and Historic Byways in Colorado, and is a spectacular 123 mile stretch of highway that provides travelers with panoramic views, a strong sense of the past, and opportunities to experience the rich culture and traditions of the region. Those who travel Los Caminos Antiguos follow a path worn smooth by ancient tribes, explorers, trappers, traders, miners, and Spanish and US settlers. The route offers spectacular views of the lush San Luis Valley, the majestic Sangre De Cristo mountain range, the Great Sand Dunes, and the San Juan Mountains.

Just as important as its scenic beauty, the Byway brings visitors face to face with the culture and strong spiritual traditions of the region’s people. Once described as a land that offers so little and yet so much, visitors to the region, like those who have traveled throughout the area for the past 10,000 years, cannot help but encounter the spirit of enchantment that characterize this special place and the people who reside there.

Designated Scenic Byways have become a very popular way for RV and car travelers to connect with an up close and personal vacation experience.
