INTRODUCTION TO
MULTIMEDIA

Introduction to Multimedia is an online course designed to provide you with a basic understanding of interactive multimedia. In these four interactive hands-on lessons you will learn how multimedia is used to develop applications designed to entertain, educate, and motivate.
Lesson Contents

Lesson 1 offers an overview of the fundamentals of Multimedia. In this lesson you will be introduced to the fascinating world of multimedia. You will learn what is meant by interactive multimedia and why it has become so prevalent in our society. You will experience examples of multimedia and study the media components and features of multimedia applications. In addition, you will learn about the equipment used in developing and delivering multimedia applications. You will study how text can be used effectively in multimedia applications. You will learn how to work with text-intensive applications and how to use fonts to enhance an application. In addition, you will learn what to consider when using text in a Web-based application. You will study how graphics can be effectively used in multimedia applications and learn how to choose between the different types of graphics and where graphics can be obtained. You will study the programs used to create and edit graphic images and their common features. In addition, you will learn what to consider when working with graphics in a Web-based application. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Describe the components and features of multimedia
- Explain, using examples, the types of multimedia applications
- Explain, using examples, the ways multimedia applications can be delivered
- Describe the difference between the equipment used to develop and deliver multimedia
- Explain why text is important in multimedia applications
- Specify when text is appropriate for use in a multimedia application
- Apply the appropriate techniques for text-intensive applications
- List three sources of fonts
- Select the appropriate fonts for a specific application
- Describe the design guidelines for working with text
- Explain the considerations for using text for Web-delivered applications
- Explain why graphics are so important in multimedia applications
- Explain the difference between bitmapped and vector-based graphics
- Calculate the file size of a graphic given the image size in pixels and the color depth
- List three sources for graphic images
- Describe the common features of graphics programs
- Explain the considerations for using graphics for Web-delivered applications

Lesson 2 is all about sound, animation, and video. You will learn how they are developed and used in multimedia applications. At the end of this lesson you will be able to:
- Explain why audio is so important in multimedia applications
- Explain the process for digitizing sound
- Calculate the file size of an audio clip given the sample rate and resolution
- List three sources for audio clips
- Describe the common features of sound editing programs
- Explain the considerations when using audio in a multimedia application
- Explain the considerations for using audio in Web-delivered applications
- Define animation and explain why it is important in multimedia applications
- Give examples of how animation is used in multimedia applications
- Describe the types of animations
- Explain the process for creating animations
- Explain the considerations when using animation in multimedia applications
- Explain the considerations for using animation in Web-delivered applications
- Explain why video is important in multimedia applications
- Give examples of how video is used in multimedia applications
- Explain the process for creating digital video
- Describe digital video file compression
- Explain the considerations for using video in multimedia applications
- Explain the considerations for using video in Web-delivered applications

In Lesson 3 you will study how multimedia applications are designed and developed. You will learn about the different types of authoring tools (programs), their features, and how they are used to create multimedia applications. You will also learn how to plan and execute a multimedia development project like a pro. At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Describe the types of multimedia authoring tools and their features
- Explain how the popular multimedia authoring tools work
- Explain when a particular type of multimedia authoring tool should be used
- Describe the types of authoring languages and how they work
- Explain the considerations of authoring for Web-delivered applications
- Specify the steps used in developing multimedia applications
- Explain why the planning process is so important
- Create a planning portfolio. Distinguish between goals and objectives
- Create project specifications, storyboards, and flowcharts
- Distinguish between the various navigation structures
- Distinguish between alpha and beta testing

Lesson 4 focuses on the design process in multimedia development and how to take your design and using a popular authoring tool, get it built to perfection. At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Use design concepts in developing the appearance of multimedia applications
- Use design concepts in developing the navigation of multimedia applications
- Use design concepts in developing the user interactivity of multimedia applications
- Specify how the target user, type of application, and contents affect the design
- Use an authoring program to develop a multimedia application
- Describe the development process used by Authorware
- Use the basic features of Authorware, which include creating a flowline, importing graphics and sounds, creating animations, inserting text, and creating interactions.
