HELP lessons use the highly effective learning approach called Sheltered Instruction to teach math. Sheltered Instruction is an instructional method designed to make academic content (such as math and science) more comprehensible to a wide range of learners. Sheltered Instruction is used to teach content while developing English language proficiency at the same time.

This and every lesson in HELP Home is made up of 7 important sections:

1. Real World Activity - The Real World is an engaging activity which provides a real world example of the lesson’s content. The aim is to immerse the learner in the lesson’s content by connecting to the learner’s prior knowledge, reflect on emotions/feelings, historical events, etc. This section helps answer the lesson’s Essential Question, an embracing learning objective of the lesson. There is an optional Spanish audio feature in this and all of the 7 sections, whereby English Language Learners (ELL's) can hear a synopsis of the page content in their home language.

2. Vocabulary - This is one of the unique features of the HELP program. We have discovered through extensive testing that mastery of the language of math is key for learners struggling to learn math. The learner is exposed to the key vocabulary repeatedly and sees and hears the vocabulary used in context, preparing the learner to understand and apply math vocabulary and build math fluency.

3. Instruction - This is an instructional development section with interactivity in which vocabulary support is applied to particular math concepts and is taught in the context of a math lesson. Key terms are repeated over and over to reinforce the learner’s understanding of the meaning of the vocabulary, as well as to develop understanding of the math concept itself, along with supporting math fluency.

4. Try It - The learner practices using vocabulary and math key concepts in context, with interactive feedback. These are “bite size” math assessment questions, in which the learner masters the ability to read and apply the key terms and math content with language support throughout in standardized question format.

5. Scenario or Game - The learner engages with an interactive game or “real world” scenario, in which vocabulary development and math key concepts are applied in a fun and interesting way. In the game or scenario, there is interactive feedback to facilitate math concept and fluency development.

6. Test Skills - This section has two parts. The first part, called “4 Step Plan,” is always the same for all HELP lessons. HELP provides a four-step plan to HELP learners think about and correctly answer test questions through problem solving processes.

In the second part of this section, HELP provides an instructional assessment question (which closely mimics the style of standardized assessment questions) in which the learner practices the skill of reading and comprehending standardized (“high stakes”) test questions through problem solving processes (restating the problem in their own words, organizing the information, solving the problem utilizing problem-solving strategies, and checking their answer). The learner masters how to approach standardized test questions in a non-threatening environment, with interactivity and feedback loops.

7. Final Quiz - In sections one through six, the learner has access to language support throughout the section. For example, key terms hyperlinks, key terms glossary, (providing English and Spanish definitions and pictorial examples), a calculator, and Need More Help are always available. In the Final Quiz Section, these supports are deactivated so that he or she can practice test taking in a typical environment. The Final Quiz aligns to math content and math vocabulary objectives for the lesson.

The Final Quizzes are randomized so that each time the learner takes the quiz he or she will receive a different set of questions. Quizzes are instantly scored and the learner can view all of his or her answer selections. Wrong answer selections will also indicate the correct answer.
