The HELP Home Math Program can Help!
HELP Home is an internet-based, supplementary math curriculum designed to remove language barriers from the learning of math skills and math content. The HELP program has been demonstrated in schools to help middle school and high school students increase performance in mathematics by providing language acquisition support. And now, there is a version for home use!
Help Home is comprised of a series of rich interactive lessons that present mathematical terms and concepts in a sheltered format so that students can better and more easily understand the content. There is ample, expert instruction and lots of practice to support learning. HELP was developed in partnership with middle schools, major universities, PBS, and the US Department of Education.
Effectively teaching math to Learners in Middle School
- Students can interact with the material privately at their own pace, lessening embarrassment
- Lessons are multi-sensory, highly interactive, colorful, musical, and age-appropriate. Modules incorporate voice instruction, music, visuals, text, and interactivity in order to keep students engaged in ways that textbooks or lectures cannot.
- Students hear, see, and apply language all at the same time; materials emphasize authentic situations
- Non-graded assessment and interactive feedback loops provide students constructive feedback and an opportunity to learn from their mistakes. “Hints” and “Show Me” buttons are provided throughout the course.
- Includes Spanish language support throughout the entire program.
HELP demonstrated gains of more than 70% for sixth and seventh grade students

An independent pilot evaluation of HELP using a randomized pre-post, two group (treatment, comparison) design shows treatment student grades 6-12 improved their scores on the standards-aligned post-test by 42%.

Research shows that students’ quick mastery of the program contributes to increased self-esteem and an increase in perceived ability to learn math.

Teachers observed that students stay on task for about 30 minutes per sitting & choose to return to task.
